Meet The Photographer
Eventing Images is the home of Nottinghamshire based Freelance Sports Photographer Tim Wilkinson. With over 25 years of experience photographing sport, Tim has spent the last two decades focusing almost exclusively on equestrian sport disciplines, becoming a specialist in photography Eventing.
In 2007, Tim reached a point where he began to question both his photographic ability and his long-term passion for the craft. Determined to challenge himself and reinvigorate his enthusiasm, he turned his attention to the world of equestrian sport. He became particularly fascinated by Eventing and, more specifically, the Cross Country phase—a thrilling discipline that combines speed, precision, athleticism, and elegance.
Tim had first been introduced to Eventing as a youngster during annual visits to the Burghley International Horse Trials. However, during his teenage years his interests shifted toward motorsport, with a passion for the high-octane worlds of Superbikes, Touring Cars, Formula One, and Rallying.
While exploring new opportunities to develop his portfolio, Tim rediscovered Horse Trials almost by chance after noticing several cross-country fences scattered around the grounds of Chatsworth. Curious to learn more, a quick online search revealed a number of local events across the region. Intrigued, Tim decided to attend one—and he was instantly hooked.
Since then, Tim has steadily expanded both the number of events he attends and his involvement in the sport. He is now a regular presence at events across Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Leicestershire, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, and Norfolk. His annual calendar also includes many of the sport’s premier events, including Badminton, Bramham, Burghley, and Blenheim.
The growth of social media played a significant role in expanding Tim’s reach and visibility. Platforms such as Facebook have allowed him to connect with a much wider audience, and the support he has received from riders, owners, and sponsors has helped establish his reputation within what is a highly competitive field of sports photography.
Today, Tim is recognised as one of the regular photographers on the Eventing circuit. His work has led to him becoming a regular contributor to a local magazine Equestrian Life, as well as international opportunities with Australian base An Eventful Life. Through a collaboration with Swedish Eventing, Tim serves as their UK-based photographer, capturing Swedish riders competing across the British eventing calendar.
How It All Started
Tim received his first “real” camera, a Canon EOS 300 35mm SLR with a kit lens, for his eighteenth birthday, and he hasn’t looked back since.Armed with his new camera and tickets to the Formula One British Grand Prix at Silverstone, Tim had the perfect opportunity to start photographing a sport he had long admired. Over the following years he attended a variety of motorsport and sporting events, capturing thousands of images as his passion for speed, competition, and adrenaline continued to grow.
During the era of film photography, developing costs naturally limited how many images he could take. However, the arrival of digital photography transformed this completely, allowing him to shoot more freely and refine his technique. As a result, the quality and consistency of his work improved significantly
Today Tim shoots exclusively with a fully mirrorless professional setup. A long-time Canon user, he currently works with two Canon R3 flagship professional camera bodies. His primary lens - the workhorse of his aresnal - is the Canon RF 100–300mm f/2.8, renowned for its speed, precision, and exceptional image quality. Additional lenses include the Canon RF 70–200mm f/2.8L IS and the Canon RF 24–105mm f/2.8.This professional equipment enables Tim to achieve his core photographic aim: capturing images that are not only technically sharp but also convey the motion, emotion, speed, and adrenaline of the moment.
